Did We Just Become Best Friends

Best Friends

I recently came across the movie Step Brothers (2008) again. It’s an OTT funny, cringe-worthy comedy about Brennan Huff (Will Farrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) who become step-brothers when Brennan’s mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) and Dale’s father Robert (Richard Jenkins) marry.

Brennan and Dale now have to share a room together as two 40-ish immature, childish, lazy, unemployed grown men. They initially despise each other and try and do crazy, silly things to try and hurt each other.

But after Dale punches Brennan’s successful brother Derek (Adam Scott) for ridiculing and belittling them during his visit, Brennan has a newfound respect for Dale and they find they actually have a lot in common and have an ‘a-ha’ moment where they realise they’ve just become best friends!

Brennan utters the classic line to Dale: ‘Did we just become best friends’ in this iconic scene.

Watching this movie again reminded me that a great friendship is just about the most important thing in life. So how do you know if you and your friend are on your way to becoming or already are best friends status?

Well, here are 10 signs to know you’ve got a best friend 🙂

You inspire each other to do better

You’re friends for a reason – you both see the best in each other. You’re both motivated to succeed and help each other achieve your goals. You inspire each other to do great things and be the best version of yourself that you can be.

You bring out each other’s strengths, and you always support your friend when they’re going through a hard time or just need a friend to talk to.

Your friend inspires you to visit new places and try new things, and you inspire your friend to dream big! You give each other a sense of hope that things will work out in the end when you’re together.

You’re always there for each other

Your best friends are there for you when you’re going through a tough time or just need a friend to talk to, and vice versa.

When you’re going through a rough patch with anything, they are here to help; whether it’s a big life event or a problem that’s so small that nobody else is even bothered by it, they are always there for you through thick and thin!

Their support and advice make your problems seem a lot less scary and daunting because no matter what the problem is, you’re both on the same team and have the same goal – get through it and not fall apart!

So when you’re going through a tough time, it may seem like you’re the only one that’s going through it or that you’ll never get through it, but your friend is there to remind you that you aren’t alone and that you’ll be okay in the end!

You both make each other laugh so much

You both make each other laugh and have so much fun together! You’re always laughing together and doing something so ridiculous that it makes both of you laugh hysterically!

You get each other’s sense of humour and start cracking up laughing for seemingly no reason at all, just because you know the other is finding the same situation funny. It’s because you’ve developed your own language and in-jokes with each other over the years.

When you spend time together, you make fun of each other a lot and laugh through everything. You never take things seriously and are never upset about anything when you’re together because you can always forgive each other pretty easily and forget everything quickly because of how silly you are together and how fun it is to laugh about everything!

You challenge each other’s weaknesses

You’re both different in so many ways, but that’s okay because you’re both different in the best of ways. Your differences bring out the best of each other – you challenge each other in a way where one of you learns something and the other grows as a person. You learn your strengths and weaknesses when you challenge each other. You both grow a lot in your friendship when you challenge each other to be a better version of yourself than you were before.

Neither of you are perfect and you both make mistakes along the way – you learn from these mistakes and improve as a person.

You trust each other

You know you can trust each other with anything, and you always know you’re safe in each other’s presence. You know that they would never hurt you or betray your trust in them in any way. You trust each other with your secrets, stories, thoughts and feelings and can vent about life without fear of judgment or condemnation. You know that you’ll always be there for one another no matter what.

You share similar interests

You both like the same films, music, and bands – whether it’s movies or music that you’re both into. You both like the same food, and like going to the same places on the weekends.

When you like the same things it’s easy to have a lot to talk about because you see eye to eye on a lot of things. You know your ideas and thoughts will be heard and understood because of how much you know and have in common.

You may also take on your best friend’s interests and hobbies as they’re so into it, and this gives you both the opportunity to share more quality time together. Then you start gaining a genuine interest in the same hobbies as you start spending a lot of your time on them too.

You’re not afraid to show your love for each other

You’re not afraid to show your friend how much you care – whether you’re telling them that you love them, or kissing them on the cheeks because you’re happy to see them, you show them how much you care about them through your actions.

You don’t hold anything back because no matter what you say, they know that you’re completely happy with them. You can be comfortable around them and they’re always there for you when you need them.

There’s also no barrier between you because you never hide your feelings from each other. Your friend knows you care about them and you love them for all the little things they say and do for you.

You talk and hang out with each other every chance you get

Your friend makes you the centre of attention and makes everything seem exciting and fun when you’re doing it together.

You spend countless hours together, whether it’s on vacations, watching movies or just having a good laugh over a cup of coffee. You’re both always up for one more drink, one more dance, or just one more slice of pizza!

You’re in communication with each other all the time whether it’s talking on the phone, texting, messaging or seeing each other IRL (in real life) because you want to share everything with each other.

You love and accept each other unconditionally

You support each other unconditionally no matter what you do or who you are. It doesn’t matter if one of you loses their job or if one of you is dating someone new or someone breaks up with you.

You never hold anything back or have any boundaries because you love each other so much and because you’re best friends.

And finally

Having a best friend is one of the greatest gifts in the world. They’re always there for you and you love them for all the little and big things they say and do for you and vice versa!

The comedy Step Brothers tells the story of Brennan and Dale’s journey from being adversaries to becoming best friends.

So if you and your friend exhibit some of the qualities outlined above, then you’re super lucky as it looks like you’ve got a bestie for life!
